Description

The Medico Apollo Brylon pipe is a distinctive example of American pipe-making innovation. Produced under the long-running Medico brand, which was established in 1933 by the S.M. Frank Company, the Apollo was part of a series of pipes made from Brylon, a proprietary material introduced in 1966. Brylon combined high-temperature resin with finely ground wood flour, creating a pipe that was more affordable and considerably more durable than traditional briar.

The Apollo was designed as a practical smoking pipe for everyday use. Like many Medico models, it featured the company’s well-known filter system, which helped reduce moisture and provided a cooler, cleaner smoke. The Brylon construction also made the pipe highly resistant to burnout, cracking, and other forms of wear that can affect briar pipes over time. While some pipe smokers note that Brylon pipes can smoke warmer than traditional briar, many appreciate their ruggedness, ease of maintenance, and value. Discussions among collectors and pipe enthusiasts often describe Brylon pipes as nearly indestructible, making them popular as dependable “workhorse” pipes. This particular Apollo is a miniature version of a churchwarden and its age makes it highly collectible. The bowl is deceptively large, given the thin wall thickness allowed by the structural strength of Brylon.

The pipe you see is the pipe you get. This pipe came to us from a private collection, and where necessary, has been expertly restored by a local craftsman. This pipe was previously smoked but has been completely and professionally reconditioned and sanitized. Because it has been pre-owned, the price is drastically reduced compared to what this pipe would cost new (assuming that you could even find it). We stand behind these pipes; if you ever have an issue, return it to us for repair or refund.

About Medico Tobacco Pipes

For generations of pipe smokers, Medico tobacco pipes have represented one of the most accessible and dependable introductions to the hobby. Known for their practicality, affordability, and distinctive filtration system, Medico pipes have earned a loyal following among both novice and experienced pipe enthusiasts throughout North America.

The history of Medico dates back to the early twentieth century when the company began producing pipes in the United States. Medico quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to pipe design, particularly through the introduction of its patented paper filter system. At a time when pipe smoking was one of the most popular forms of tobacco enjoyment, the company focused on creating pipes that delivered a cooler, drier smoking experience while remaining affordable for everyday smokers.

One of the defining features of a Medico pipe is its filter. Unlike many traditional pipes that rely solely on pipe cleaners and careful smoking technique to manage moisture, Medico's paper filters help absorb excess moisture and impurities from the smoke. This design can reduce tongue bite and make for a smoother smoking experience, particularly for those new to pipe smoking. The filters are inexpensive and easy to replace, contributing to the brand's reputation for convenience.

The company has produced a wide variety of classic shapes over the years, including Billiards, Bulldogs, Apples, Princes, and Bent pipes, ensuring there is a style to suit nearly every smoker's preference. Medico pipes have traditionally been crafted from briar, the dense root burl prized by pipe makers worldwide for its heat resistance and durability. While Medico pipes are generally more affordable than many artisan-made or premium European brands, they are known for offering reliable construction and excellent value. In the 1960's the company patented Brylon, a mixture of wood dust and resin. Collectors often appreciate vintage Medico pipes for their connection to American pipe-making history. Models from the mid-twentieth century remain popular on the estate pipe market, where they are valued for their durability and nostalgic appeal.

Today, Medico continues to be regarded as a practical choice for smokers seeking a quality briar pipe without a substantial investment. Whether purchased as a first pipe, a dependable everyday smoker, or a collectible piece of Americana, Medico pipes have maintained their place in the pipe-smoking community through a combination of innovation, affordability, and enduring reliability. Their long history serves as a reminder that a good pipe need not be extravagant to provide years of enjoyable service.
