Description

Trypis tobacco pipes were made and sold by Phillip Trypis from his shop located in Oakwood, Ontario. These pipes were stamped “Made in Canada” with his name, a mark that pipe smokers came to associate with dependable build quality, traditional styles (like billiards and apples), and attractive grain. Trypis pipes are respected for their balance, feel, and smokeability. This particular pipe has unique etchings on the bowl and stem, giving it a tribal appearance. The saddle stem is a thoughtful design element that adds grace to the overall appearance of this above average length, hefty billiard pipe.

The pipe you see is the pipe you get. This pipe came to us from a private collection, and where necessary, has been expertly restored by a local craftsman. This particular pipe has been previously smoked but was professionally restored to "good as new" condition. Because it has been pre-owned, the price is drastically reduced compared to what this pipe would cost new (assuming that you could even find it). We stand behind these pipes; if you ever have an issue, return it to us for repair or refund.

About Trypis Pipes

Trypis Tobacco Pipes refers to the handcrafted briar pipes created by Canadian pipe artisan Phillip Trypis, a figure beloved by many pipe enthusiasts for his craftsmanship and long tenure in the world of tobacco pipes. Though not a large commercial brand like some European makers, Trypis pipes hold a distinct place in the community of collectors and smokers due to their quality, heritage, and the story of the man behind them.

Phillip Trypis was originally born in Greece before emigrating to Canada, where he would ultimately build his life and career around the art of pipe making. Over more than four decades he developed deep experience in every stage of the craft — from cutting raw briar burl in a mill to shaping, finishing, and turning countless briar bowls. His deep skill set made him a natural fit for one of Canada’s most prominent pipe companies.

Before establishing his own line, Trypis worked for Brigham Pipes, a well-known Canadian pipe manufacturer based in Toronto, where he served as production manager. In that role he oversaw large-scale production, directing the creation of over 50,000 pipes per year, and was influential in shaping the quality and consistency of those pipes. His work at Brigham not only demonstrated his technical mastery but also cemented his reputation within the domestic pipe community.

Eventually Trypis launched his own label — Trypis tobacco pipes — selling handcrafted briar pipes from his shop located near Toronto and later in Oakwood, Ontario. These pipes were stamped “Made in Canada” with his name, a mark that pipe smokers came to associate with dependable build quality, traditional styles (like billiards and apples), and attractive grain. Though many of his pipes are relatively affordable compared with high-end artisans, they are respected for their balance, feel, and smokeability.

In the later years of his life, Phillip suffered health setbacks that limited his ability to travel and sell his work, but his legacy remains through the pipes enjoyed by hobbyists and collectors alike. Enthusiasts often seek Trypis pipes on the estate market, appreciating both the craftsmanship and the story of a self-made artisan whose life was devoted to the timeless trade of pipe making.
