Description
The Manx Straight Billiard meerschaum pipe is a classic example of traditional pipe design paired with the unique qualities of genuine meerschaum. Renowned for its clean lines and timeless appearance, the Straight Billiard shape features a cylindrical bowl and a straight shank and stem, creating a balanced and comfortable smoking instrument that has remained popular for generations.
Carved from block meerschaum sourced from the Amboseli basin in Tanzania by the Tanganyika Meerschaum Corporation. African meerschaum is generally denser and slightly less porous than Turkish meerschaum, giving it excellent durability. Manx Straight Billiard pipes offer smokers a remarkably cool, dry, and flavourful smoking experience. Meerschaum's porous structure naturally absorbs moisture and tars, helping to deliver a cleaner taste while reducing tongue bite. Unlike briar pipes, meerschaum pipes require no break-in period and can be enjoyed immediately.
One of the most appealing aspects of a Manx meerschaum pipe is its ability to develop a rich patina over time. Unlike many classic pipes, Manx meerschaums often feature factory-stained rims (giving them a "pre-broken-in" aesthetic) and push-style rather than threaded tenons. Combining elegant styling, excellent smoking characteristics, and the distinctive beauty of ageing meerschaum, the Manx Straight Billiard remains a favourite among both novice and experienced pipe enthusiasts.
The pipe you see is the pipe you get. This pipe came to us from a private collection, and where necessary, has been expertly restored by a local craftsman. This pipe was previously smoked but has been completely and professionally reconditioned and sanitized. Because it has been pre-owned, the price is drastically reduced compared to what this pipe would cost new (assuming that you could even find it). We stand behind these pipes; if you ever have an issue, return it to us for repair or refund.

About Manx Tobacco Pipes
Manx tobacco pipes represent a distinctive chapter in the world of artisan pipe making. Produced on the Isle of Man, located in the Irish Sea between England and Ireland, these pipes gained recognition among collectors and smokers for their quality craftsmanship, attractive finishes, and traditional British styling.
The most well-known Manx pipes were produced during the latter half of the twentieth century, often drawing inspiration from classic English pipe-making traditions while incorporating unique design elements. The Isle of Man has long been associated with skilled craftsmanship, and pipe makers on the island developed a reputation for producing dependable briar pipes that offered both durability and smoking performance.
Manx pipes were typically crafted from high-quality Mediterranean briar, a material prized for its heat resistance and ability to deliver a cool, dry smoke. The briar was carefully selected and shaped into a variety of traditional forms, including Billiards, Bulldogs, Dublins, Apples, and Bent pipes. Many examples featured clean lines and balanced proportions, reflecting the influence of classic British pipe design.
One of the characteristics that set Manx pipes apart was their attention to finishing. Smooth finishes often showcased attractive grain patterns, while sandblasted and rusticated versions provided additional texture and visual appeal. The makers paid close attention to drilling and engineering, ensuring proper airflow and a comfortable smoking experience.
Collectors frequently seek out vintage Manx pipes due to their relative scarcity and connection to a unique geographical location. While they may not enjoy the same widespread recognition as some of the larger English marques, Manx pipes have earned a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate well-made, traditionally styled smoking instruments.
The Isle of Man itself has a rich cultural heritage, and this sense of tradition is reflected in many of the pipes produced there. Some examples bear markings or nomenclature that reference the island’s history and identity, adding further appeal for collectors interested in pipes with a strong regional character.
Today, surviving Manx pipes can often be found in estate pipe markets, where they are valued for their smoking qualities and historical significance. Well-preserved examples continue to provide excellent service decades after their manufacture, a testament to the skill and care that went into their creation.
For pipe enthusiasts seeking a piece of British pipe-making history with a unique island heritage, Manx tobacco pipes offer an appealing combination of craftsmanship, collectability, and enduring smoking performance.
